In a Senate meeting dealing with the aftermath of the Catiline conspiracy, there was heated debate about whether the conspirators should be killed without trial.
Julius Caesar argued strongly against, much to the annoyance of Cicero and most of the other senators.
During the meeting, the tribune Cato the Younger noticed someone handing a note to Caesar, and assumed it was from the supporters of Catiline and would prove Caesar’s involvement in the conspiracy, so he demanded he be allowed to read it to the Senate.
Caesar gave it to him, and Cato began loudly and triumphantly reading it aloud.
He stopped pretty quickly when he realised it was not a letter of any political importance.
It was a love letter.
